There are certain times of the year where job hunting is more productive than others. While January and February are often said to be ideal, springtime is also a good time to look for a new job. Hiring managers are eager to get new employees in place before Memorial Day, so the first half of the year is typically better than the last half if you’re hoping to land a new job.

What’s so great about January and February?

The first two months of the year are when hiring managers get their budgets together, and very few people are on vacation. It makes for a good time for everyone to come together to form group hiring decisions. The first part of the year tends to move at a slower pace for most industries, so the downside to looking for a job in January or February is that the hiring process could drag on since the company has plenty of money and time to choose the ideal candidate.

Springtime hiring

Some hiring managers will tell you spring is the best time of year to look for a new job. Managers are eager to hire and train their new team members before Memorial Day. After that, summer vacations can make it difficult to move through the hiring process. More people tend to be looking for jobs in March, April, and May, though, so you may have more competition. This is also the time of year when a lot of soon-to-be college graduates will be hitting the workforce.

Other things to consider

It’s easier to find a job when you already have one.

Author Alison Green explains in her book, “How To Get a Job: Secrets of a Hiring Manager” that people who are employed have the edge over those who are unemployed. Joblessness can send the message that there’s something wrong with you. Many hiring managers assume you wouldn’t quit your current job without having one lined up unless you were about to be fired or that you really were fired and are just saying you left.

Timing isn’t everything.

Just because most industries may adhere to certain hiring seasons doesn’t mean all do. Most hiring managers are looking for employees to start work immediately but will understand a two-week delay as you should be giving two week’s notice to your previous employer. With that in mind, if you graduated in May and need a job in June, look for a job in June. If you were laid off in October and need a job in November, start your job search in November.

Talent Management Agencies will find you a job any time of the year.

Talent Management Agencies are the easiest way to find a job. Most large, well-known companies work with agencies, so you can get your foot in the door by working with them. They have plenty of jobs listed on their website and once your resume is in the system, you will be considered for all relevant jobs. Plus, if you’re unsure of what you want to do, or you need experience, talent management agencies can place you in a temporary job and move you to another once that contract is finished. That’s a great resume booster!

Consider when you apply

A study conducted by the software firm SmartRecruiters found most jobs are posted earlier in the week. They discovered Tuesday is the best day to apply for the job you want. But they looked even deeper and found the exact best time of day to apply for a job: between 11:30 am and 12:30 pm. The second best time would be 4:00 pm.
